Connections:

If you are like most people, the back of a computer can be very confusing, especially since most of the connections are not properly marked. I hope this helps: Click here for a labeled diagram of a typical computer.

Maintenance you Can Do:
Regularly performing Windows maintenance will help to keep your system in peak condition. Scandisk and Defrag are located in the System Tools area of the Start menu under Programs> Accessories. If you happen to encounter problems when performing these duties, you will need to start the system with a minimum of drivers/ and tasks in the start menu etc. Sometimes, depending on the number of programs that your operating system may be running, these programs may interfere with the Scandisk nd Defrag process, so it is necessary to start Windows with only the basics running. This insures that nothing will interfere. For instructions on how to do this, press here

Viruses:

Viruses, unfortunately, are a big problem these days and although new computers will always be 100% virus free upon delivery, it is your responsibility to keep it that way. In most cases the system has been delivered with the most up to date VirusScan from McAfee installed on it. However new viruses are being reported every day, and it becomes necessary to update the "DAT" files for your scan engine. This is a relatively  simple operation. Simply go to the McAfee website and download the latest "DAT" File. It may take awhile to download, but that is a small price to pay for peace of mind and safe data integrity.

Drivers:

In order to keep your PC working in peak condition, it is necessary to maintain the latest or most current drivers at all times. "Drivers" are the software programs that tell the operating system (Windows) how to use the different types of hardware that are in your computer. Most, if not all hardware manufacturers will post the most up-to-date drivers for their products in the "Support" sections of their websites. All that needs to be done, is to locate the necessary drivers for your hardware peripherals, download the installation programs to your PC, and then run the installation wizards from your hard drive. Many of the wizards that come with these installation programs also have "readme" instructions as well. It is a good idea to read through these files as well so that you will be aware of all compatibility issues. I have seen new drivers make a huge difference in the performance of a particular sub-system, so it is to your benefit to take advantage of this procedure. I have included links to many of the more common hardware manufacturer websites on my Links Page . You should check there first, but if the hardware supplier you are looking for is not listed there, there are several sites on the web that are dedicated to just this topic. Some of the more dependable sites are as follows:
