| My Games Room/ Home Theatre:
For
many years now, I have wanted a high performance home theatre system
and a kick butt
games room. This has been the plan, and took many years to finally come
to
fruition. I much prefer to watch a movie
in the comfort of my own home,
provided the quality of picture and sound are up to speed. There is
just
something about it that is infinitely more desirable than hiring a
babysitter,
driving to a theater, trying to find a parking space, standing in line,
paying ridiculous
fees, sitting in uncomfortable chairs, dealing with rude movie goers
etc. And
then there's the problem when nature calls... No thanks! With a good
home
theater system the film experience can be so much more
fulfilling! Our growing DVD
collection
now stands at over 850
titles... so the biggest problem is deciding which film to watch!
So here are the details for all you audio/ videophiles out there: Home Theatre: Environment: There are 3 obvious elements that make a quality home theatre system... they are: the environment, visual reproduction and of course, sound reproduction. With regards to the environment, we custom built our basement to accommodate our home theater system, complete with digital coaxial cable hook-ups and high frequency speaker cable strung throughout the insides of the ceilings and walls. The details of this project are published on our "Basement Renovation" page. ![]() Visual
Reproduction:
For the day-to-day television signal, we selected High Definition Cable. There are many arguments that support a satellite signal option, (be it from one of the many available suppliers), but since we have several other televisions in our home that are used regularly, and since the cable option still supports regular analogue signals for these sets without the need for additional conversion devices- the cable signal option makes the most sense. As such, we have a Scientific Atlanta- Explorer® 3250 HD interactive set top box for signal reception for our home theater system. Although our Sony® Grand Wega fully supports integrated signal conversion via Cablecards, our service provider (Rogers®) does not offer such a device, so in order to receive full HD support, we are forced to use the set top device. The next part
of the visual aspect, is media reproduction for movies, in this case
the DVD
player. Until
recently, Sony® also made the best DVD players,
but sadly, this has
waned
somewhat in recent years. We chose a Yamaha® DVD C750B, for a couple
reasons-
compatibility with the rest of our Yamaha® audio components, and
functions and
features. We wanted a high quality 5 disc carousel DVD unit and Sony®
did not
have a model that had this feature (in black to match the rest of our
system).
This being said, we searched out a Yamaha® unit which contains all the
functions
and features we were looking for:
Audio Reproduction: When it comes to audio products,
we again chose Yamaha®. Yamaha® is a
sound
company, not an electronics company. They probably know sound better
than any
company on the planet. This comes from their development and
manufacturing of
musical instruments for more than 100 years. This being the case, it
was a
natural progression for their development and manufacturing of the
electronics
that reproduce the sounds made by musical instruments... In my humble
opinion,
and for this
reason, Yamaha®
makes some of the best audio components available. Here
are the details of our Yamaha® sound
components:
For speaker
systems, I have always been partial to Paradigm®.
Twenty-five or so years ago, I purchased a pair of Paradigm® 5 speakers
for
my first home stereo...
and they are still going strong today. Paradigm® have come a long way
since
then, and they are still rated among the top speaker system
development
companies on the
market today, so I felt no reason to buy anything but Paradigm® for our
home
theater
system this time. There are 8 of them
altogether,
details are as follows:

The Games Room: Billiards Table:Ever since I was in high school, I've wanted my own pool table. A friend of mine had one in his parent's house, and we spent many evenings trying to beat each other at one of the finer games in life. The problem is, you need a big room to accommodate such a piece of furniture. Since we were renovating the basement already, we finally had an opportunity to plan for such a room. My dream of owning a pool table final came true in the spring of 2005. In my quest to find a pool table that best suited my needs and wants, I considered a number of different manufacturers including Olhausen®, Brunswick®, American Heritage®, Connelly®, Beringer® etc. and finally decided upon Olhausen®. They make a superior table in my humble opinion and is the best value on the market. Instrumental in this decision making process was the fact that there is an Olhausen® dealer right here in Kitchener, which is run by a gentleman by the name of Peter Wilson. He was most helpful and considered all my needs and wants and was actually a pleasure to deal with. The installer- Mel and his assistant are also very conscious of their customers' needs and are very professional at what they do. I recommend Olhausen® Billiards to everyone I speak to when the topic arises. They can be contacted at: Billiard

![]() ![]() Wet Bar: We built a fully functional "L" shaped wet Bar with Oak upper and lower cabinets & post-formed countertop. It has a full size fridge to keep all the drinks cold!. One of these days, I will build a "pub-style" stand up bar to go along with it, but, for now, this will suffice. Dart Board:
